Text Box: Back in old Mexico there are many legends about who invented the nacho chip, but El Molino was told this version by Juan de Nachos himself and he swears it to be true.
One day, Juan de Nachos decided to visit his old friend Manuel Labore. When he arrived, he was surprised to find Manuel busy in the kitchen.
“Manuel”, he cried, “que pasa in your casa? You are more worked up than a pound of jumping beans in a live volcano!”
“Soon my landlord, Don Givame Excusas, will be here for his rent,” moaned Manuel. “I haven’t a single piece of gold for him – all I can do is fool him with this corn flour.”
“Don Givame is foolish as a blind bullfighter, Manuel, but you are more foolish if you think he can’t tell corn flour from gold.”
“Just get off your burro and help me. Together we can pull the sombrero over his eyes.”
For the next hour, Manuel and Juan worked frantically. They mixed the corn flour with water and added spices to enrich them. Then they shaped the mixture into round pieces and hardened them in the oven. By the time the landlord arrived, everything was ready.
“Buenos dias, Don Givame,” said Manuel nervously. “Here is your rent.” Don Givame examined the gold pieces suspiciously, and then placed one between his teeth to test its strength. Manuel closed his eyes and whispered, “Adios amigo! We are dead as two Aztecs at a conquistador convention.””
“Delicioso!” proclaimed the landlord. This is better than gold! For 10 more of these, you can live in this house forever.”
Manuel opened his eyes to see Don Givame munching contentedly and Juan leaping in excitement.
“Hombre!” exclaimed Juan. “Now you have something that will make you a rich man. No longer will you be simple Manuel Labore.”
“Si Juan. I’ll make more — and I’ll make them bigger. And to thank you, I’ll name them after you — “Nachos” will be on everyone’s lips!”
“Gracious, Manuel — now you are rich and I am famous!”
“Fame and fortune! I can think of only one thing better.”
